How To Apply to Clinical Psychology PhD Programs

About Me

Here's my story. I went to undergrad at Knox College in Galesburg, IL. A lovely private college with a big research emphasis. It was there that I got interested in research, and immediately realized that I should, no, had to go to graduate school. In the fall of 2003, around, oh, just after Thanksgiving (mistake!), I started to apply, mostly to evolutionary psychology programs.

I didn't get accepted to a PhD program that year. Luckily, my advisor must have realized how poorly I was applying and convinced me to apply to a few master's programs. I applied to the College of William & Mary's excellent experimental psychology M.A. program the day before the application was due (express mail is your friend), and I managed to get accepted.

My second year at William & Mary (2005), I again applied to PhD programs, this time in clinical psychology. I was accepted at one school - the safest of all my safety schools. I didn't actually want to spend 6 years of my life there. Luckily, I had anticipated this possibility and had applied to several research assistant jobs. I was fortunate to get a job as a research coordinator at the Olin Neuropsychiatry Research Center in Hartford, CT, and later moved to the Mind Research Network in Albuquerque, NM.

I applied for the third time in the fall of 2007. Success! Out of 9 schools, I received three interviews, all at highly-renowned schools. I got accepted to two of the schools, and I am currently attending Kent State University. I'm actually grateful for my former "setbacks" as they taught me a lot about applying and allowed me to gain some extremely valuable experience. And now, I can pass the knowledge gained from my setbacks on to you! I can't think of anything more rewarding than that :)

About me, more personally. My field of research is in psychosis, specifically schizophrenia. I'm originally from Illinois and have lived in Virginia, Connecticut, and New Mexico before moving to Ohio. I have two zebra finches, one kitten, and one husband.
